BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) is a green building rating system established in the UK in 1990. It defines environmentally sustainable design, construction and operation criteria at building scale. According to these criteria the energy efficiency, water efficiency and health of buildings are rated on a five level scale of Pass, Good, Very Good, Excellent and Outstanding.
For BREEAM certification the designed building is rated under categories such as management processes, health and wellbeing, energy and water use, transport, materials, waste, land use, ecology, pollution, and innovation. Innovative approaches and new practices in engineering aim at higher points on this scale, and therefore building more sustainable buildings, increasing the brand value of projects and minimizing the building’s damage to the environment throughout its life span. Designing each type of building with the different approaches needed while holding the same passion for sustainability at all times is crucial both in terms of corporate sustainability and achieving appropriate designs for reducing environmental impacts of buildings.
