Located in İstanbul, the Başakşehir Çam ve Sakura Şehir Hastanesi is a massive healthcare facility spanning 1,000,000 square meters with a capacity of 2,682 beds. This state-of-the-art hospital not only addresses the healthcare needs of the community but also sets a benchmark in sustainable building practices.
Sustainable Sites (SS)
One of the primary focuses of the project was to enhance the sustainability of the site. With a total of 9 points out of 14 in the Sustainable Sites category, several measures were implemented:
- Alternative Transportation: The project scored full points for public transportation access, bicycle storage and changing rooms, low-emitting and fuel-efficient vehicles, and parking capacity, reflecting its commitment to reducing transportation-related emissions.
- Heat Island Effect: Measures to mitigate the heat island effect, both on the roof and non-roof areas, were successfully incorporated, earning full points in these subcategories.
Water Efficiency (WE)
Water conservation was a critical component of the hospital's sustainability strategy. The project achieved 8 out of 9 points in the Water Efficiency category:
- Water Efficient Landscaping: Implementing no potable water use for irrigation was a significant achievement.
- Water Use Reduction: Through careful measurement and verification, and the inclusion of water-efficient fixtures and systems, the project excelled in reducing overall water consumption.
Energy & Atmosphere (EA)
Energy efficiency and management were at the forefront, with the hospital securing 26 out of 39 points in this category:
- Optimize Energy Performance: The hospital achieved the maximum possible points by optimizing energy performance, a critical factor in reducing the building's operational carbon footprint.
- Enhanced Refrigerant Management: Sustainable refrigerant practices were also a focus, contributing to the project's overall energy and atmosphere score.
Materials & Resources (MR)
The use of sustainable materials that have EPD Certification and effective resource management were pivotal, with 7 out of 16 points earned in this category:
- Construction Waste Management: The project successfully managed construction waste, ensuring a significant portion was diverted from landfills.
- Sustainably Sourced Materials: Emphasis was placed on using materials with lower environmental impacts, such as those sourced sustainably and containing reduced amounts of harmful substances.
Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ)
Ensuring a healthy indoor environment for patients and staff was paramount, reflected in the 5 out of 18 points in this category:
- Construction IAQ Management: Plans to maintain indoor air quality during and before occupancy were effectively implemented.
- Low-Emitting Materials: The use of low-emitting materials helped minimize indoor air pollutants, enhancing the overall indoor environmental quality.
