Project Features and Sustainability Approach

The Başakşehir Fatih Terim Stadium in Istanbul stands as a prime example of environmental sustainability, achieving the prestigious LEED Gold certification. Spanning 93,877 square meters, this state-of-the-art stadium goes beyond being a mere sports facility by prioritizing environmental awareness and energy efficiency.

Sustainable Sites – 21/26 Points:

The Başakşehir Fatih Terim Stadium is advantageously located to meet sustainability goals. It has achieved full points for public transportation access (SSc4.1), encouraging spectators to use environmentally friendly transportation options. Additionally, it features bicycle storage and changing rooms (SSc4.2), parking for low-emitting and fuel-efficient vehicles (SSc4.3), and supports urban density and community connectivity (SSc2), highlighting the importance of urban density and community integration.

Water Efficiency – 6/10 Points:

The stadium also excels in water efficiency with innovative wastewater technologies (WEc2) and significant reductions in water use (WEc3). These measures are crucial for conserving water resources both within the stadium and its surroundings.

Energy & Atmosphere – 13/35 Points:

Energy efficiency is another standout feature of the stadium. Efforts to optimize energy performance (EAc1) have led to substantial energy savings. Additionally, enhanced refrigerant management (EAc4) and continuous monitoring and verification systems (EAc5) ensure that energy use is consistently optimized.

Materials & Resources – 6/14 Points:

The Başakşehir Fatih Terim Stadium has also made significant strides in material and resource sustainability by implementing construction waste management (MRc2), using recycled content (MRc4), and sourcing regional materials (MRc5).

Indoor Environmental Quality – 7/15 Points:

Indoor air quality and occupant comfort are prioritized within the stadium. Construction IAQ management plans (EQc3.1 and EQc3.2), the use of low-emitting materials (EQc4.1 and EQc4.2), and thermal comfort design (EQc7.1) all contribute to optimal indoor environmental quality.

Innovation and Regional Priority Credits:

The project earned additional points through innovative design solutions and the support of LEED Accredited Professionals (IDc1 and IDc2). It also excelled in regional priority credits, such as optimizing energy performance (EAc1) and thermal comfort verification (EQc7.2).

At ERKE, we provided LEED consultancy and energy modeling services for the Başakşehir Fatih Terim Stadium project, helping it achieve its sustainability goals. Our energy modeling optimized the building's energy performance, while our LEED consultancy minimized the project's environmental footprint. These efforts resulted in the stadium earning the LEED Gold certification, setting a high standard for environmental sustainability.

The Başakşehir Fatih Terim Stadium is a model not only for Istanbul but also for Turkey in achieving environmental sustainability. We believe this project will serve as an inspiration for future construction projects to prioritize environmentally conscious and energy-efficient designs.
