American University of Kurdistan Male Residence Facility Earns LEED Gold in Duhok

The American University of Kurdistan Male Residence Facility (MRF), for which we managed the sustainability consultancy and certification process as ERKE, has achieved LEED Gold certification with 62/110 points under the LEED v4 BD+C: New Construction rating system. Located in Duhok, Iraq, the six-story, 7,744 m² residence facility was certified on July 23, 2026. Throughout the project, we integrated energy performance, water efficiency, responsible material selection, indoor environmental quality, and sustainable site strategies with the building’s operational requirements. Accommodating 183 students in 103 bedrooms, this LEED-certified student residence provides a strong regional reference for sustainable campus living.

Project Overview

LEED Scorecard Summary

Location and Transportation – 5/16

As ERKE, we evaluated the site location, available transportation infrastructure, and student mobility patterns as an integrated whole. We managed the sensitive land protection, surrounding density and diverse uses, bicycle facilities, and green vehicle criteria through an optimum strategy aligned with the project’s regional conditions, achieving 5/16 points.

Sustainable Sites – 7/10

We incorporated open-space protection, rainwater management, and heat island reduction measures into the site strategy. Through our engineering coordination, the project earned 3/3 points for rainwater management and 2/2 points for heat island reduction, completing the category with 7/10 points.

Water Efficiency – 7/11

We integrated a landscape strategy that reduced outdoor water demand while establishing building-level water metering requirements. We also optimized indoor water use in line with efficient fixture targets, enabling the project to achieve 7/11 points in the Water Efficiency category.

Energy and Atmosphere – 18/33

We assessed energy consumption scenarios through energy modeling and secured 10/18 points under Optimize Energy Performance. By coordinating fundamental and enhanced commissioning with renewable energy production, green power, and carbon offset strategies, we achieved a total of 18/33 points in this category.

Materials and Resources – 7/13

We developed the material strategy around life-cycle impact reduction, environmental product declarations, and responsible sourcing criteria. Our procurement and documentation guidance also enabled the project to achieve 2/2 points for Construction and Demolition Waste Management, bringing the category total to 7/13 points.

Indoor Environmental Quality – 10/16

We coordinated enhanced indoor air quality, low-emitting materials, and construction-phase air quality management with a strong focus on student health and well-being. The project achieved 3/3 points for daylight and 1/1 point for quality views, strengthening natural lighting and visual comfort throughout the residence and delivering 10/16 points overall.

Innovation – 3/6

We incorporated applicable innovation opportunities into the certification strategy based on the building’s function and its role within the university campus. The project earned 2/5 points for Innovation and 1/1 point for the involvement of a LEED Accredited Professional, completing the category with 3/6 points.

Regional Priority – 4/4

We strategically targeted credits addressing Duhok’s environmental and climatic priorities, including heat island reduction, outdoor water efficiency, optimized energy performance, and renewable energy production. Through this focused approach, we secured the maximum 4/4 points available in the Regional Priority category.

Integrative Process – 1/1

From the early design stages, we aligned architectural, mechanical, and electrical disciplines around shared performance objectives. By integrating energy and water-related decisions into a coordinated design process, we achieved the full 1/1 point available for Integrative Process.
