Located in Burdur, Turkey, the AVOYA Beverage Factory achieved LEED BD+C: New Construction v4 Silver Certification on December 6, 2024, marking a significant milestone in sustainable industrial development. At ERKE, we are proud to have served as the LEED consultant for this prestigious project.
Several strategic decisions and implementations played a crucial role in helping the facility reach the LEED Silver level, significantly minimizing environmental impact while ensuring long-term energy and water savings. With a total of 50 points, the project demonstrated outstanding performance particularly in water efficiency, sustainable site development, and materials management.
1. Integrative Process (1/1 Point): From the early stages, the project adopted a multidisciplinary approach, clearly defining energy and water efficiency goals. This enabled systematic and effective decision-making throughout the design and construction phases.
2. Water Efficiency (9/11 Points): The project significantly reduced water consumption through 100% efficient cooling tower systems and an 83% reduction in indoor water use. Building-wide water metering also enhanced transparency and monitoring capabilities.
3. Sustainable Site Development (7/10 Points): Full points were earned in rainwater management, heat island reduction, and open space planning. These measures helped protect the local environment while providing healthier outdoor spaces for occupants.
4. Energy and Atmosphere (10/33 Points): Through optimized energy performance (9/18 points) and enhanced refrigerant management, the facility achieved lower energy consumption and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Although on-site renewable energy production has not yet been implemented, future opportunities remain promising.
5. Materials and Resources (6/13 Points): The project successfully addressed environmental product declarations (EPDs), material ingredients, and construction waste management. These efforts improved construction site practices and supported more sustainable material selections.
6. Indoor Environmental Quality (6/16 Points): The health and comfort of building occupants were prioritized through the use of low-emitting materials, indoor air quality planning during construction, and enhanced indoor lighting quality.
7. Innovation and Regional Priority (8/10 Points): Thanks to ERKE’s innovative strategies, the project was awarded 4 innovation credits. Additionally, it earned 3 regional priority credits tailored specifically to the environmental needs of the project’s location.
At ERKE, we played an active role throughout every stage of the LEED certification process for the AVOYA Beverage Factory. From defining sustainability strategies to managing the certification documentation, we provided technical and administrative guidance every step of the way. Given the complexity and evolving structure of the LEED v4 rating system, identifying and implementing the right strategies was essential for the project’s success.
Through tailored optimization proposals, we ensured cost-effective solutions while maximizing LEED points. Our team provided training to all stakeholders, streamlined documentation collection, and maintained strong communication with USGBC, ensuring a smooth and efficient certification process.
This success story is the result of ERKE’s experienced team and holistic approach to sustainability. The LEED Silver certification of the AVOYA Beverage Factory stands not only as an example of an environmentally responsible industrial facility but also as a model for the sustainable factories of the future.
