Faurecia Yenikoy Factory: The Strength of Sustainable Manufacturing with LEED Gold

Located in the industrial district of Sepetlipınar in Kocaeli, the Faurecia Yenikoy Factory achieved LEED BD+C: New Construction v4 Gold Certification on April 15, 2025, marking a major step forward in sustainable manufacturing. With a score of 67 points, the project implemented exemplary strategies in environmental impact reduction, energy efficiency, and resource optimization. Throughout the LEED process, ERKE Sustainability Consultancy played an active and integral role.

Faurecia, a global leader in automotive interior systems and mobility solutions, demonstrated its commitment to environmentally conscious production through this facility. The Yeniköy factory stands as a successful example of green building practices integrated into an industrial facility.

Strategies That Secured LEED Gold Certification

1. Location and Transportation Performance (12/20 Points): The project's integration within a dense urban area, proximity to essential services, and access to high-quality public transportation contributed significantly to its score. Dedicated parking spaces for low-emission vehicles and reduced parking footprint also helped minimize carbon emissions.

2. Energy and Atmosphere (25/33 Points): A large portion of the LEED score came from energy efficiency. The building earned 18 points in optimized energy performance and additional credits for on-site renewable energy generation, green power procurement, and refrigerant management. These strategies helped lower the facility’s carbon footprint and reduced long-term operational costs.

3. Water Efficiency (7/11 Points): The use of low-flow fixtures in interior spaces and the optimization of landscape irrigation systems reduced overall water consumption. Building-wide water metering systems were installed to enable continuous monitoring and data-driven management.

4. Materials and Waste Management (6/13 Points): Points were earned by using materials with Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), responsibly sourced content, and transparent supply chain documentation. Additionally, more than 90% of construction waste was diverted from landfills, significantly reducing environmental impact.

5. Indoor Environmental Quality (5/16 Points): Enhanced indoor air quality strategies, air quality management during construction, and optimized interior lighting solutions directly contributed to occupant health and comfort. For a high-volume industrial environment, these efforts are especially critical in supporting employee well-being.

6. Regional Priority and Innovation (8/10 Points): The project successfully addressed all region-specific priority credits, including heat island mitigation and access to diverse surrounding services. With ERKE’s strategic input, four additional innovation points were earned by implementing advanced and exemplary sustainable practices.

ERKE’s Consulting Role: Beyond Certification

The Faurecia Yenikoy Factory is more than just a production facility—it is a tangible reflection of how sustainability can be embedded into corporate culture and physical infrastructure. As ERKE Sustainability Consultancy, we led all aspects of the LEED certification process, from strategic planning and credit targeting to documentation and communication with USGBC.

Through energy modeling, material assessments, indoor environmental simulations, and water use strategies, we provided not only technical compliance but also a long-term roadmap for sustainable operations. The LEED Gold certification is the result of this comprehensive and collaborative approach.

This project now stands as a model for how environmental performance and production excellence can coexist in the industrial landscape of Kocaeli, inspiring similar future developments.
