Nestlé Health Science Karacabey Plant: A New Standard in Health and Sustainability with LEED Gold

Located in Karacabey, Bursa, the Nestlé Health Science Karacabey Production Plant was awarded LEED BD+C: New Construction v4 Gold Certification on April 7, 2025, becoming a strong example of both environmental responsibility and corporate sustainability. ERKE Sustainability Consultancy played a key role in this achievement by providing comprehensive LEED consulting services.

With a total of 64 points, the facility reached LEED Gold status, demonstrating high performance especially in energy efficiency, water management, renewable energy use, and regional priority strategies. This project illustrates how production facilities in the health sector can be designed in accordance with green building standards.

Key LEED Strategies and Implementations

1. Integrative Process Management (1/1 Point): From the outset, interdisciplinary planning with a strong focus on sustainability was implemented, enabling maximum efficiency in energy, water, and material use.

2. Location and Transportation Strategies (6/20 Points): Strategies such as sensitive land protection, integrated density, and preferred parking for green vehicles helped reduce the project’s environmental impact. Although limited public transport access slightly lowered the score, vehicle emission reduction strategies were successfully applied.

3. Sustainable Site Development (5/10 Points): Achievements in stormwater management, heat island reduction, and comprehensive site assessment reflect the project's commitment to enhancing landscaping and site infrastructure with sustainability in mind.

4. Water Efficiency (9/11 Points): Low-flow fixtures and water-saving systems were used indoors and outdoors, reducing potable water consumption and improving system efficiency. Water meters allow continuous tracking of consumption.

5. Energy and Atmosphere (25/33 Points): The project earned 18 points for optimized energy performance, showing its high efficiency in energy use. The incorporation of on-site renewable energy (3 points) and green power certificates reduced environmental impact. Advanced metering and refrigerant management also contributed to the score.

6. Materials and Resources (5/13 Points): Environmentally responsible material selection included Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and sustainable sourcing. Over 90% of construction waste was diverted from landfills, earning 2 points.

7. Indoor Environmental Quality (4/16 Points): Enhanced indoor air quality strategies and construction-phase air management increased occupant comfort. Lighting design also contributed to visual comfort and helped boost this category’s score.

8. Regional Priority and Innovation (9/10 Points): With strategic input from ERKE, the project secured all available regional priority credits—including energy performance optimization, land protection, and stormwater management—and earned 4 points in innovation, extending the project's sustainability vision into the future.

ERKE’s Contribution to the LEED Certification Process

The Nestlé Health Science Karacabey Plant is not only a production facility but also a model of infrastructure aligned with global sustainability goals. As ERKE, we provided a strategic roadmap for the investor, technical guidance to the design and implementation teams, and complete management of the LEED documentation process.

Through energy modeling, water consumption analysis, material assessments, and occupant health-focused strategies, we not only met point targets but also added long-term value to the facility’s operational life.

Successfully certified at LEED Gold level, this project stands as a pioneering example of how sustainability in the food and health sectors can be both achievable and impactful.
